Faithe Olson

I am drawn to furniture making because of my strong attraction to functional art and because of my interest in the relationship between objects, users and the space they occupy. To me, furniture and lighting seem like a natural outlet to pursue these interests. Much of my work is created to take on an interactive, creature-like presence, almost becoming a character in the landscape of daily life. My intent is that these characters can enhance an environment by adding an additional dimension to the objects that constantly surround us. Through making furniture with doors, drawers and by using lighting, I am attempting to make furniture that gives a user more to explore and connect with. The patterns in my work are heavily influenced by my fascination with structural, mechanical elements, repetition and layering. The interrelation between parts of a whole is of great interest to me and how elements connect, intersect, cradle or support each other is one of the main things that inspire my design choices.
